Here be monsters: Nicola Byrne talks about the dark side of the internet

Teaching us about the dark side of the internet and testing the experts at Social Media Summit is Cloud 90’s Nicola Byrne.

To start, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Mother of 3, cat, dog and a wonderful, supportive partner.

How did you get into your career?

I work for myself because I can tell I’m difficult and like to get my own way. Started as an export clerk and at 28 set up my own business and have been self-employed ever since.

I love the daily innovation

What do you consider the greatest achievement in your work to date?

Creating jobs and bringing new ideas and concepts to life. I love the daily innovation and creative piece and enjoy watching ideas become invoices.

How does Social Media support your work?

It is my work. We watch the internet live for risks for clients and it’s never dull. We read the internet live 24/7 and we collate the information by taking out risks and actionable data and cleaning data sets so that people have the data they need to have at the time they need to have it.

What is the one app you can’t live without? Personally and for your business!

Solitaire – I play the daily challenge every day and hate to miss a day.

What is the one app I can’t live without? Solitaire.

What is the one piece of Social Media advice you would give to businesses?

Buy RiskEye Online Reputation Protection. It’s an insurance policy everybody should have!  The internet is the Wild West and you need protection

What do you think is the next big thing in Social Media?

Discovering it’s not happy-clappy and fun and that real people get hurt when it goes bad.  Words do matter. Words have consequences and businesses do fail if these words are left unchecked.

What will your brand/ business be focusing on in the Social Media landscape this year?

Providing RiskEye with the people powered back end of monitoring. Software wouldn’t know a risk from a benefit and our job is to put context and emotional intelligence over the data to make it valuable.

What can the attendees of this year’s Social Media Summit look forward to hearing from you?

What the dark side looks like. We spend all day with companies and RiskEye to get the bad stuff down off the internet and nobody understands the internet and what the rules are.

What are you most looking forward to at the Social Media Summit this year?

Testing the audience of social media experts to see if they can work out what reviews can come down and if they can come down under what rule did it come down. It’s a fun quiz and nobody has got all the answers right to date so the challenge is on!
